The Laboratory for Reactor Physics and Systems Behaviour (LRS) forms part of PSI's Nuclear Energy and Safety Research Department (NES). The laboratory is engaged in both analytical and experimental R&D related to the operation of current and future nuclear power plants. Its strategic goal is to strengthen the sustainability of nuclear power via research along the following two principal lines
- Improved understanding of the complex phenomenology of nuclear safety,
- Physics of complete fuel cycle closure in the context of plutonium management and waste reduction.
Thereby, the use of PSI’s major facilities, in particular the PROTEUS
research reactor, plays a central role. Furthermore, the lab’s activities have a direct bearing on education in nuclear science and technology (fission) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the LRS projects largely determining the framework for both PhD and Master’s research topics at EPFL in this field.
